Every year, Volkswagen traditionally organizes an event for its fans in Wörthersee, Austria, and this year surprised its fans with a gorgeous new version of its iconic hatchback, the Golf GTI TCR.
The new factory-finished hot hatch marks the company's participation in the Touring Car Racing series, in which the manufacturer supplies private teams with a special version of the 345 hp model developed by Motorsport's sports division. Although the GTI TCR is currently only shown as a prototype, VW said the car will hit the market this year and won't even be a limited edition. However, given the fact that a new 8th generation model will arrive by 2020, we can predict a short life cycle for the sports version of the TCR.
The power of the new addition to the GTI family comes from the familiar 2.0-liter turbo engine used in the Clubsport, producing 286 hp. at 5000 rpm / min. This force occurs during the so-called overboost, when the pressure in the turbine increases from 1.9 bar to 2.1 bar within 10 seconds, while the power increases by 44 hp.
Volkswagen has confirmed to the media that the product version of the Golf GTI TCR will use this engine, which is fitted with a particulate filter and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system, which has so far only been available in the Golf R.
As with the standard model, here you will have 4 control modes - Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual. Data on the weight and acceleration of the car is not yet known, but the company said that the top speed could increase from 250 km / h to 270 km / h.
For reference, the Golf GTI Clubsport, with which the TCR shares its drive, accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds and weighs 1375 kg.
Even the photographs show that the car is moving to new 19-inch wheels, its height has been reduced by 20 mm, brake discs and calipers have also grown.
In terms of looks, Volkswagen claims the changes will directly affect its performance. The Golf GTI TCR differs from its standard version mainly by a re-grouped front bumper, as well as a rather aggressive rear diffuser that houses Acrapovic tips.
The company has announced that buyers will be able to choose from five exterior colors, including a new clean gray and four more that have so far been available in the GTI. Innovative in the TCR is the "honeycomb" pattern depicted on the sides, typical of the version, and the model's logo, which is projected onto the ground when the doors are opened.
